There's an abundance of things to do in this region from visiting our local winery and a day trip to the more distant wineries;
- to bush walking
- horse riding
- golfing
- fishing
- visiting craft venues
- historic town walks
- photography
- skiing – both water and snow
- ballooning
- abseiling
- rock climbing or
- mountain biking.
The list is endless.
Remember you are going into an alpine environment. You'll need waterproof pants and jacket, gloves (not vinyl), hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (SPF
30+).
Waterproof oversnow boots are a must. Snowboot hire, for children especially, is a good investment to ensure a longer stay in the snow.
Cold fingers and toes make for unhappy children and happen quite quickly after a few snowballs have gone flying!
Don't forget a change of clothes for when you're ready to head for home.
It is compulsory for chains to be carried when entering an alpine resort in Victoria during the winter season (from June 1 to the end of the season). Failure to do so could result in a $165 fine plus three demerit points from your licence.
Both good reasons to make the small investment of about $15 for your day trip to the snow.
The other good reason to hire chains is for safety.
Your chains must fit the tyres of the vehicle you are travelling in.
It may be fine and sunny with a clear road when you make your way up the mountain. But your downward journey may see a typically dramatic change in the weather. It is known to deteriorate rapidly in the High Country. The road could be covered in snow and quite slippery for your homeward journey.
Chains can be hired at most Ski Hire outlets and some service stations in Mansfield, Mirimbah, or Merrijig. They need to be obtained before arrival at the Mirimbah Traffic Control point where gate entry is payable.
Always fit chains where directed by a parking officer or signage or when you feel you need to. There are chain fitting bays for this purpose.
After fitting chains always check they are tight.
Be wary of others fitting chains, who may be underneath their cars making adjustments, or driving slowly in hazardous conditions.
A chain fitting service is available on Mt Buller.
The consequences can be dire and very expensive.
Even if staying off-mountain it is advisable to have anti-freeze in your radiator. If you're not sure ask. Most service stations can oblige.
The Mt Buller Rd is sealed all the way and is quite wide. It winds its way up the mountain and care should always be taken - particularly if the road is covered with snow.
The Mt Stirling Rd is unsealed from Mirimbah to the car park at Telephone Box Junction,
a distance of about 7 kms.
For further information on gate entry requirements and
charges please see www.mansfield-mtbuller.com.au
For those not wishing to drive themselves up the mountain, there is a bus service available which can be caught in Mansfield, Merrijig or Mirimbah.
Security parking for vehicles is available in Mansfield and at Mirimbah. For Mirimbah Security Park contact Mirimbah Traffic Control office.
Once you've entered the resort proceed up the mountain to the car parks, a distance of about 16 kms. You will be met by parking attendants who will direct you where to park.
Always leave your vehicle in gear or "PARK" with the hand brake OFF. Turn off your lights and lock up.
For Day Visitors a FREE bus shuttle to the Mt Buller Village operates from 8 am till 6pm.
Overnight visitors will need to catch a four wheel drive taxi from the overnight car park to their lodge. The cost of this is about
$14.00 per adult. Children are about $8.50. Ask about a special family ticket. The
ticket covers two items of luggage, skis, stocks and boots. Excess luggage is
about $3.50 per item. Within the village a 4WD taxi service is available.
